Big data: from data compilatoin to decisions automation B
The most important part of Big Data is the use of the Internet. In the area of Supply chain, Big Data is still in its infancy but offers great opportunities for automating decisions.
There are three major areas where Big data helps us:
- Predictive predictions
- Performance monitoring
- Monitoring and optimisation of transportation
Today, tools such as BI or web solutions such as PingView can connect to heterogeneous databases to collect information of any format and then display them in a readable and dynamic way in real time.
IOT: connected “things”
There were 10 million connected objects in the world in 2015 and there will be nearly 30 million in 2020. Among them are trailers, swap bodies, pallets, containers, tools, spare parts, construction equipment and etc.
The IoT (Internet of Things) radically changes the way we operate and manage the supply chain. As a result, companies have a vision for a digital project. And that’s why they want to set up a digital POC (Proof of Concept for a new projects).
Digital POC
Digital transformation is not longer questionable in particular with IoT and Big Data and also with 3D printing, collaborative robots, virtual reality and etc.
Unlike a large pilot project whose objective is to validate and prepare a future technology deployment. Digital POC starts without having a complete defined idea of the benefits and consequences in terms of organisation. The purpose of the Digital POC is to test the use and relevance of a technology on a small perimeter in order to evaluate the return on investment and identify potential uses.
For a digital POC to be successful, you must:
An initial problem: this problem can obviously evolve during the POC
A sufficient number of data: this data must be easily retrievable and usable
An average delay for 3 to 4 months depending on the projects: it should be noted that there may be several POCs but the first must be as simple and efficient as possible
A digital support: screen, tablet….
